STELLA is the translator between the network and the luminaire. Lighting data arrives over Ethernet as Art-Net or sACN; STELLA converts it into two separate DMX512 lines. Each port carries one universe, or 512 channels, and configures itself automatically as an input or output.
Why screw terminals instead of XLR?
In a permanent installation, the device sits inside a panel on a DIN rail. The DMX line connects directly to a 3-pin screw terminal; no XLR socket or adapter cable comes in between. Fewer connection points mean fewer failures in the field. Ethernet carries the long distance, and the DMX line stays close to the luminaires.
Remote configuration with RDM
STELLA talks two-way with RDM-enabled luminaires on the DMX line: it finds up to 170 devices per port and lets you change their addresses and settings remotely. When used together with MADRIX RADAR, all RDM devices connected to STELLA are unlocked free of charge in the software; RDM and Art-Net traffic flow at the same time without interrupting the show.
We explain the basics of DMX512 and the line rules in our DMX512 guide.
