We lit the facade and sign wall of the U.S. Embassy Ankara with ColloRado wall washers; the vertical lines and material texture remain legible at night, and the sign wall takes on color on special days.

The first rule of lighting a diplomatic building is restraint: the building should look dignified at night without turning into an eye-catching show. At the U.S. Embassy Ankara, we built the lighting around this balance.
Light that reveals texture
The building’s facade consists of vertical louvers and natural stone surfaces. ColloRado wall washers graze the light upward from the base of the surface, so the rhythm of the louvers and the texture of the stone stay distinct in the dark. Different beam angles made it possible to set exactly how far the light reaches on each surface, and spill light into the surroundings was kept to a minimum.
Color on the sign wall
The sign wall at the entrance is lit with the same luminaires. Calm in white light on ordinary nights, the wall can take on color on special days. Thanks to the different housing colors of the luminaires, they blend into the surface by day and create no visual clutter on the facade.
