Safat Basra is a residential complex rising in Basra in southern Iraq. The complex’s arched entrance structure stands in the middle of flat land; at night there is no other structure around to make it stand out. So the task of the light was clear: to turn the entrance into a gateway visible from afar.
Horizontal bands
The facade of the entrance blocks gains rhythm from horizontal sections. We placed StriPix P8 in these sections, and the light reads as thin, continuous lines wrapping the blocks from end to end. The insides of the arches were uplit to show the depth of the passage. The structure is thus perceived in the same linear language both from the front and from the air.
Hot climate, long nights
Basra’s summer heat and dust put outdoor luminaires to the test. Housings rated IP68 and IK10 are sealed against dust, water and impact. The color scenes are changed from a single center: a purple and pink welcome, calm nights in blue tones, a sharper look with red bands.
