The Butterfly and Ladybug Garden is a 6,230-square-meter building on the lakeshore at the EXPO 2023 Kahramanmaraş grounds. In front of the glass-fronted building are colorful tensile canopies; providing shade by day, they are the garden’s familiar image. We made these canopies the main character of the lighting as well.
We drew the edges of the tensile canopies and the lines of the building with MidiPix P8s. At night the triangular shapes of the canopies emerge as lines of light; with pixel control, colors can pass from one canopy to the next and ripple like a butterfly flapping its wings. Blue and purple tones accompany the site’s night atmosphere, warm tones its event evenings.
With the building standing at the edge of the lake, the light is doubled by its reflection in the water. We kept the lighting measured with this reflection in mind; the garden became a colorful stop on the EXPO grounds’ evening walking route.
